Redecorating & Renovating this Spring

With the onset of Spring, so many of us look to refresh our living spaces. Changing accessories, re-arranging furniture, and introducing new houseplants can make all the difference. If it’s time for a bigger project however, there’s so much more scope.

If winter is about hunkering down and creating cosy interiors, Spring signals longer days and better weather for which we want lighter, brighter spaces.

Opting for a pale interior is a great way to freshen things up, as seen in this apartment refurbishment. A neutral scheme throughout connects one room with another and the overall feel is bright and spacious. It’s also an easy backdrop to work with when it comes to adding furniture and accessories.

Another way to maximise natural light and a sense of space is to go open plan. Knocking two rooms into one or opening doorways can be transformational.

In this Eastbourne home, a kitchen, dining room and smaller room between the two, have now become one. Each space is distinct from another, but they flow seamlessly. The same flooring and wall colour throughout also helps unite the interior.

Opening up a former kitchen and separate dining room, and adding an extension in place of an old conservatory has transformed this interior too.  In place of two darker rooms and an obscured view to the garden, the room can now accommodate more people with ease and it’s significantly lighter.

In this kitchen, it’s hard to imagine the wall that once stood to create a separate kitchen and dining room. With this removed, it has been possible to incorporate more storage and worktop space, to meet the homeowners’ brief for an organised and minimalistic look.

When we think of Spring and look to Summer we want to connect with the outdoors most of all. And for that, nothing beats maximum glazing to get as much natural light in as possible. This stunning extension boasts a super-sized roof lantern and generously proportioned sliding doors.

With the doors fully opened on warm days, the inside and outside space become one. Even in the poorest of weather, it remains a light, bright room.

If the idea of combining rooms makes you shudder at the prospect of the upheaval during the building process, then it’s good to know that there are ways to minimise this disruption. Having a clear plan and timeline in place is important.  We also ensure the homes we work in are left tidy and organised at the end of every working day. It’s not unusual to create temporary rooms too, particularly kitchens so that daily life can continue as normal so far as possible. According to Sandy for who we refitted a beautiful period kitchen:

“I’d just like to say how impressed we’ve been by Colbran & Wingrove and everyone involved in working on our kitchen. Your team have all been so hard working and respectful. Every night we came home to a tidy kitchen, no matter what stage of the process they were at. I absolutely love my new kitchen (sorry ‘our’ new kitchen!) and can’t wait to gather family and friends in our new hub of the house. Thank you once again.” Sandy, homeowner.
