Hard Landscaping in Winter?

Embarking on a hard landscaping project in your garden to create a new patio, decking space or similar, can be exciting yet daunting. So many decisions to make, including when’s best to carry out work.

Hard landscaping projects in winter

We encounter lots of questions when it comes to the planning and practical considerations surrounding hard landscaping projects.

One of the most common, is about timing and whether work in winter should be avoided.

Here’s some of the reasons why we believe winter can actually be a good time to carry out hard landscaping work.

  • Disruption to your outside space will occur when you are least likely to be using it.

  • The same can be said for your neighbours who will be spending more time indoors in the winter and will be less affected by any resulting noise or disruption.

  • You are less likely to be inconvenienced by areas that are out of bounds due to open footings or setting concrete or mortar, for example.

  • Birds and wildlife are less likely to be disturbed and most trees and plants are also dormant.

  • Many landscaping jobs can be done in all but the most extreme weather conditions, and although below-zero temperatures can pause proceedings, we can have rain all year round.

  • You don’t have to do all the work at once and may find your project splits into stages allowing the hard landscaping work to be tackled out of season before moving onto planting and turfing in spring / early summer.

  • Completing the work out of season means your new outdoor space will be ready to use when summer arrives.
