Recent Residential Projects by Colbran & Wingrove

Take a look through our project gallery below for ideas, inspiration and to find out more about our work in residential properties throughout East Sussex and the Brighton & Hove area.

Period Kitchen Design

The owners of this period property opted for a simple colour palette and traditional style for their new kitchen.

  • It is a fresh, yet classic treatment that allows features such as their new Aga and original oak beams and casement windows to really stand out.
  • Designed by influential architect, Richard Goulburn Lovell, the property combines Arts and Crafts styling with a Tudor vernacular. Long but relatively narrow proportions and leaded light windows could make for a dark interior, but the new white-based colour scheme and lighting lifts it dramatically.
  • Above the bar and seating area, pendant lighting with a brushed metal finish provides soft task lighting, whilst recessed energy efficient LED spots are the perfect solution elsewhere and fit neatly amongst the beams.
  • As keen cooks, an Aga was top of the list. It provides a stunning centrepiece whilst an additional built-in oven offers the ultimate combination. Further items on the owners’ wishlist included a large American fridge freezer - chosen in the same glossy black as the Aga.
  • Clever storage was also high on the agenda. In addition to the cabinets, the kitchen features open shelving. Placing everyday ingredients in Kilner jars that are close to hand, rather than behind cupboard doors, is convenient and makes for a great display. Pull-out baskets for fresh items, a bottle rack and a handy shelf above the Aga have all been incorporated into the design too.
  • The renovation also makes great use of a mixture of surfaces and materials. Contrasting shiny granite with wood, textured tiles with painted surfaces and adding brushed metal details in places has all contributed to the resulting style which is sympathetic to the property’s design and heritage, timeless, and above all highly practical.
  • “I’d just like to say how impressed we’ve been by Colbran & Wingrove and everyone involved in working on our kitchen. Your team have all been so hard working and respectful. Every night we came home to a tidy kitchen, no matter what stage of the process they were at. I absolutely love my new kitchen (sorry ‘our’ new kitchen!) and can’t wait to gather family and friends in our new hub of the house. Thank you once again.” Sandy, homeowner.

Planning & Designing an extension for family living

This glamorous extension and renovation has created a large, open, social space that’s perfectly suited to family life.

  • Whilst the kitchen and living room haven’t moved, they have transformed and both now open to a fabulous living space that stretches the full width of the property at the rear. It provides the perfect spot for a comfy sofa and dining room table and chairs whilst expansive, full-height bi-fold doors help connect the interior and garden.
  • Maximising the view of the garden in this way gives the impression it’s one big space. This is also helped by the addition of two large rooflights that ensure the extra space has plenty of natural light. Positioned symmetrically in the flat roof, they mirror both the two sets of bi-fold doors and the two corresponding internal kitchen and living room. The result is stunning. Wherever you are, there is a view, space and light.
  • Whilst the extension is essentially one large open plan space and shares a continuous scheme for the decor, its success is the result of its sequence of clearly defined zones and the flow between them.
  • Originally, the living room connected with the dining room at the front, rather than the kitchen next to it at the rear of the property. Now, the former dining room has been separated with a new partition wall creating a further snug/TV room at the front of the house that is accessed from the hallway. The living room at the rear is now a cocooning internal space, complete with generous sofa, large TV and a sleek wall-mounted multi-fuel burner.
  • In the newly extended space a further sofa provides another lovely place to sit and is surrounded by the owner’s photography and statement tripod light. Painting the wall behind a dark, complementary grey ensures the texture and colour of the arrangement really stands out.
  • In the centre, a contemporary white console table provides valuable storage whilst the open bookcase in a warm oak finish contrasts and creates an area of interest between the bi-fold doors.
  • The owners opted for a handle-less kitchen design for its simplicity and minimalist look so that it doesn’t shout ‘kitchen’. A long run of units and a generous central island provide lots of storage and house clever features such as pop-up sockets and a boiling water tap to eliminate the need for a kettle. But the extension goes one better with a large walk-in cupboard that has been built into the space between the kitchen and the living room.
  • A utility room has also been incorporated at the rear of the kitchen. This has retained the property’s original door out to the garden on the side of the house - just the spot for the family dog to come and go when he has muddy paws.
  • Lighting is key to the success of any extension. In addition to maximising the amount of natural light within the space, artificial lighting can also be used to great effect. Alongside a striking floor-standing photographer’s tripod lamp, the owners opted for a Rako wireless lighting system with discreet, recessed LED spotlights. Longevity and energy efficiency are two good reasons to choose LED, but this system also offers multiple lighting modes to create different light levels and effect according to how you’re using the room and to highlight certain features. The lighting can be changed by a neat wireless control.
  • Finally, flooring can also bring the whole design scheme together. Here, grey, limed oak Karndean flooring runs throughout the kitchen and extension and offers a tough, practical finish which can be easily cleaned and maintained whilst also looking stylish.

Beautiful Brickwork

A beautiful new boundary wall for Arundel Place Residents’ Association.

  • And a lovely letter of thanks from the directors …‘we thank you sincerely for the impressive way in which you approached the scheduled works’
  • Colbran & Wingrove were commissioned by the Residents’ Association to demolish the former wall and rebuild an 18m length of party wall.
  • The project required us to match the original structure in terms of dimensions and style. A tricky descending slope also needed to be managed which demanded subtle adjustments in the brickwork along much of its length.
  • The result is a beautiful wall that will stand the test of time.
  • Bricks typically last far longer and require less maintenance than alternative building materials. They absorb noise giving an acoustic advantage over other materials which can be helpful in densely populated areas, and it’s a relatively sustainable material since it can be salvaged and re-used, crushed to make sub-base materials and chipped.
  • The old adage - if a job’s worth doing …

Space-Saving Interior Ideas

When the new owners of this tired apartment approached Colbran & Wingrove regarding a complete refurbishment, storage was right at the top of their list.

  • So our team got to work and along with a sleek, contemporary finish with beautiful bamboo flooring, the resulting interior features all sorts of clever space-saving / storage ideas. From an upholstered banquette in the dining area with lift-up seating to hide Christmas decorations, to a handy full-height pull-out unit, every bit of available space has been innovatively used.
  • In the kitchen, the serving hatch has a slight overhang so that bar stools can pull up to it, whilst the area above the hatch within the kitchen has even been used with a shelf for cookery books that also has integral lighting for the bar below.
  • Fitted wardrobes in both bedrooms have provided substantial storage, making use of the full height of the room, and the shower in the bathroom has recesses to neatly store toiletries. Wall-hung sanitaryware also fits in with the overall design scheme and helps maximize the sense of space.
  • Off the main living space, a previously neglected sunroom has now also benefited from a radical overhaul with windows and a door out to the balcony and an overhead pitched lantern that floods light into the room.

Contemporary Orangery Design

This Orangery has a sharp contemporary design which blends beautifully with the original property.

  • The owners of this property, which is located in a semi-rural area in East Sussex, commissioned Colbran & Wingrove to create an Orangery which would sit well within its surroundings.
  • To achieve this, the design features mid-grey Anthracite aluminium doors and windows which echo the tones of the property’s slate roof, along with a softly coloured render and an Indian stone patio which brings added warmth to the overall scheme.
  • The masonry construction of the new Orangery features a high specification insulated roof and generous pitched lantern along with expansive glazing. It has transformed former patio space creating a generous living space which provides fabulous views over the garden and beyond.

Information About Orangeries

  • Gaining in popularity, Orangeries can provide a versatile means of extending a home. They differ from conservatories by having more substantial proportions and a partially solid roof.
  • This type of construction can achieve far greater energy efficiency than that of a conservatory whilst at the same time providing a transitionary, light-filled space between main property and outdoor space.
  • With the wide range of bi-fold and sliding door systems now available on the market there’s extensive choice when it comes to creating the right design for your home.

Will I Need Planning for an Orangery?

  • By making use of permitted development you may be able to add an Orangery without requiring planning permission but there are some rules as to the positioning and dimensions of Orangeries.
  • Permission is however, required for development within designated areas such as Conservation Areas.

Renovating An Arts and Crafts Home

Homeowners Garry and Monique took a sensitive approach to the renovation of their Arts and Crafts home in Eastbourne, East Sussex.

  • The couple wanted to make a number of changes to improve the interior and give it a contemporary feel, yet at the same time retain the spirit and style of this great era which celebrated original craftsmanship.
  • Through careful planning and discussion the Colbran & Wingrove team were able to provide solutions to several structural issues and agree specific finishes and detailing to compliment the original features of the property.
  • This enabled the sympathetic development of a new, enlarged kitchen and a family / living space which opens onto the garden, plus an en-suite on the first floor.
  • The main bathroom and a further shower room were also refitted and the property was redecorated throughout once all the services were updated, including the plumbing and electrics.
  • Stunning hardwood floors were carefully sanded and sealed to restore their former beauty and the property’s windows were renewed as part of a programme of external repairs.
  • The garden wasn’t forgotten either and has provided the perfect setting for an Arbour, created by our carpenters to Garry and Monique’s specifications.
  • Garry and Monique, who were recommended to Colbran & Wingrove, are justifiably pleased with the outcome and their vision for their beautiful home.
  • Our skilled team carried out all the structural and alteration works, carpentry and decorating and we worked closely with approved supply chain sub-contractors to carry out the complete re-wire and plumbing installation works. Bexhill Electrical and Steve Garner Heating and Plumbing provided a design and installation service for the specialist trades.

Minimalist Bathroom Design in Meads

Top to toe building services by Colbran & Wingrove brought this beautiful bathroom to life.

  • The minimalist bathroom in this Eastbourne property features a calming palette of soft colours, lighting and contemporary sanitaryware, all pulled together by a meticulous finish.
  • It can be surprisingly hard to make sense of a generous space but the bold design here works well because of its scale and symmetry. Oversized sanitaryware such as the Castello luxury freestanding bath and his and her basins are balanced by design features around them.
  • To create the space, Colbran & Wingrove were commissioned to remove an existing en-suite and make structural alterations to enlarge the bathroom.
  • We created new partition walls, recessed spaces and new ceiling lines to provide the structure of the room before fitting out; including all the tiling, plumbing, carpentry and decorating works.
  • The design concept was created by Pfeiffer Design, with the tiles supplied by Designworks, specialist sanitaryware from HBC for Bathrooms, and bespoke joinery by Bay Joinery.

Kitchen Refurbishment & Fitting in Seaside

Building works to reconfigure room and fit new kitchen, flooring and re-decorate.

  • The owners of this property had their kitchen in mind and needed a team to manage every other aspect of the project, from stripping out and removing the existing kitchen, to the building works needed to reconfigure the room, before then re-fitting and decorating.
  • To create an improved space, Colbran & Wingrove removed a chimney breast plus a side door, blocking up the former opening with cavity walling. A rear window was also removed and an enlarged opening made for French doors.
  • With the electrics and plumbing capped and the ‘shell’ of the room realised, we worked swiftly to create a suspended ceiling and install recessed lighting, before then plastering throughout.
  • In this case, the homeowners had chosen and ordered their kitchen, selecting a sleek white handle-free design and wooden worktops. Along with the improved aesthetic, the smooth uniformity of newly prepared walls is great to work with and a kitchen suddenly takes shape with the addition of cabinetry. It just left our team to finalise the room with the installation of beautiful new flooring and decorating throughout.
  • According to Mrs Knight “Colbran & Wingrove have been very professional and communicated every stage of the project precisely. We had quite a major re-modelling of our kitchen and they expertly and efficiently dealt with everything – including my decision to change a window midway through! Our key workman, Colin, was excellent, as were the whole team. He paid close attention to detail, was conscientious and friendly and I was comfortable leaving him working at home while I was at work. The project manager Martin also kept me up to date on everything and always promptly dealt with any queries.
  • “In summary, my finished kitchen has exceeded all my expectations and I love it. The project has significantly improved my home and I’m extremely satisfied with the work Colbran & Wingrove carried out.”

New Orangery at Sovereign Harbour

Construction of an Orangery to extend the ground floor.

  • The striking design and build of this Orangery has created a fabulous, light-filled living and dining space with views across the harbour.
  • Alongside a unique eaves design detail and stunning roof lanterns, our skilled team worked with a large amount of glazing to deliver the highest quality finish.

New Extension Brings Urban Cool to Meads

A contemporary building extension by Colbran & Wingrove has transformed the rear of this property, creating a fabulous design-led space in place of a uPVC conservatory which previously led off the dining room.

  • Removing the rear walls of the kitchen and the dining room has resulted in a light and airy open plan layout. With the inclusion of a centrally placed roof lantern and glazed bi-fold doors, the extension benefits from plenty of natural light but its thermal performance over the conservatory that once stood has now greatly improved.
  • A combination of accent and ambient lighting has been used to dramatic effect, drawing the eye to specific design features and providing a flexible lighting scheme which can be altered according to the time of day or occasion.
  • Beautiful cabinetry by our team has provided a clever room divide which partitions and creates a display area, yet also draws the eye through from one space to another. We also love the contrast that has resulted from a sharp finish throughout and the use of different textural surfaces, from the reflective copper light fittings to an exposed brick wall which brings the period exterior of the property into the scheme.

New Build Bungalow in Eastbourne

Construction of an individually designed residence.

  • With the land purchased, the designs in place and relevant planning permissions obtained, Colbran & Wingrove tendered in competition for this project and were awarded the build contract.
  • We carried out all the works, from clearing the land to the construction of the bungalow and fitting out. We were also appointed to carry out external works and some of the landscaping.

House Extension & Alterations In Wannock

Construction of an extension, plus remodelling and refurbishment to all other rooms.

  • Transforming limited bungalow space to meet the needs of a family requires a little clever design and planning and proves the merit of smart construction.
  • Here, the addition of a large single storey extension by Colbran & Wingrove, together with complete re-modelling and refurbishment works throughout the remaining rooms in the property has created the perfect new home.
  • The newly extended rear and side spaces have provided an additional family room with kitchen, dining room and play area. The master bedroom was altered to improve the space here, and a beautiful en-suite bathroom added, whilst the former garage was linked to the property and converted to create an office, a valuable utility room and extended living room space.

Porch Addition to Property in Uckfield

The design and construction of this new porch perfectly matches the property.

  • This new porch was built to blend seamlessly with the existing house, with matching brickwork, tilehung detail and a pitched slate roof.
  • Internally, it provides a deceptively spacious entrance hallway, allowing for a downstairs cloakroom/WC and for an area to be fitted out with shoe/boot storage and hanging space for coats. As part of the works, Colbran & Wingrove removed the former external entrance door and fitted a new internal door to lighten the porch and entrance.
